Some car buyers inquire whether there are Volkswagen diesel models currently on the market. For this buyer demographic, we’re proud to share that there are. The brand, in fact, has its own diesel engine type known as a Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engine.

Find out which models utilize this engine type. You can see these vehicles at Heritage Volkswagen Catonsville.

About the TDI Engine

As implied in its name, TDI engines work by injecting fuel and air directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure. The fuel is also delivered into each cylinder individually, which optimizes performance and fuel efficiency. It also utilizes state-of-the-art twin dosing technology within the exhaust system.

TDI shouldn’t be confused with Turbo Stratified Injection, or TSI engines. The latter refers to newer technology that utilizes the charged air and fuel vapors as it enters the combustion chamber to assist in ignition.

Here’s a look at some models with an available TDI engine.

Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf utilizes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It’s also one of the few models to offer a six-speed manual transmission.

The output of this model is 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. With the TDI engine comes robust power condensed within a compact frame.

Volkswagen Jetta

Past model years of the Volkswagen Jetta offered the TDI engine as an option, but in 2017 it was replaced by a TSI engine. However, our pre-owned inventory may have one or more units of this beloved model with the TDI diesel engine.
