Whether you drive a new 2016 Volkswagen Passat or an older model, the fall is a great time to take a road trip. With the leaves turning colors and the temperatures dropping to comfortable levels, even a day trip can give you the chance to enjoy the vibrant colors and invigorating weather of fall. While fall does give you the chance to enjoy some breathtaking foliage, the season brings some challenges that aren’t necessarily concerns during other times of the year.
The most obvious hazard that drivers have to deal with during the fall is the same thing that makes this season so beautiful – falling leaves. Wet leaves on the roadway can make a road as slick as it would be if it were covered in ice. Although it’s virtually impossible to avoid roads that have leaves on them, there are some precautions you can take to navigate leaf-strewn streets safely.
The first thing you can do is slow down the same way you would if the roads were icy. Remember the speed limit is the maximum speed you are allowed to travel, it’s not a mandate for you to drive at that rate of speed. Slow your vehicle to a speed that is appropriate for the road conditions as you travel on a leaf-covered roadway. They may also be hiding a road peril such as a large inanimate object that would damage your vehicle if you hit it.
Another hazard that’s unique to fall is wildlife. While you should always keep an eye out for animals in or near the road, fall is the season when deer mate. This means that deer will be particularly active during the fall, which can increase the likelihood that the animals may bolt onto a road unexpectedly. If you see a road sign that indicates deer are probably in the area, slow down and remain alert for the presence of animals. If it’s nighttime and cars are not approaching from the opposite direction, turn your high beams on to better illuminate the road in front of you.
