Every year, the IIHS evaluates the crashworthiness of new models across brands to see how the vehicles will survive in actual collisions with other automobiles and roadway hazards. Based on how the cars perform in five crash tests and how well their respective front crash prevention systems perform, they receive an overall safety rating.
Vehicles that get the top mark of “good” in each crash test and a rating of “basic” for their front crash prevention systems receive an overall safety rating of Top Safety Pick. Automobiles that earn a grade of “good” in the IIHS’s crash tests and have front crash systems that are considered “advanced” or “superior” are given the IIHS’s top rating of Top Safety Pick+.
