Year after year, winter remains a challenge for people everywhere. It's a struggle to stay on top of shoveling your driveway and some days even getting out of bed when the temperature outside is literally too painful to bear. Fortunately there's one thing you can count on all winter long -- your 2016 Volkswagen Golf.

Towson drivers rely on their vehicles to get them through week after week of snowy traffic jams and icy turn lanes. Here are six tips that will keep your vehicle operating in tip-top condition through it all.

1.      Take time for a tune-up now. Waiting until winter is upon us will only put your vehicle at greater risk of running into or exacerbating problems.

2.      Test your vehicle's defroster, heater and wipers in advance. Generally speaking, windshield wipers should be replaced every six months, but drivers may want to consider switching over to winter wiper blades and cold weather washing fluid for added performance until spring.

3.      Replace antifreeze in the cooling system, which should be done every two years.

4.      Check your brakes, battery and charging system as well as tire tread depth and tire pressure heading into the winter. Also be sure to check tire pressure on a weekly basis throughout the winter.

5.      Test your exhaust system for possible carbon monoxide leaks, which are particularly dangerous as winter driving often means windows are closed.

6.      Check your vehicle's oil and filter regularly. While you're at it, ask your technician to check the vehicle's air, fuel and transmission filters to be sure that your vehicle is prepared to operate in top condition all winter long.

If your car could use an expert's examination, we encourage you to visit our Volkswagen Service Center at Heritage Volkswagen Catonsville before the cold weather strikes.
