Saying Good Bye to the Volkswagen Beetle

Having been Volkswagen dealers in Maryland for years, we can tell you that the end of an era will soon be upon us all. That’s because we’ll have to say good bye to the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle in the months ahead.

The Volkswagen Beetle first came to America way back in 1949. Now, 70 years after the iconic car made its way to the United States, production of the VW Beetle will come to a stop after the 2019 model year.

“The loss of the [VW] Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the…[the car’s] many devoted fans,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the U.S. and ramp up our electrification strategy with the MEB platform, there are no immediate plans to replace it.”

Woebcken continued by saying, “But as we have seen with the [VW] I.D. BUZZ—which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary [VW] Bus—I would also say, ‘Never say never.’ We’re excited to kick off a year of celebrating one of the true icons of the automotive world, with a series of events that will culminate in the end of production in Puebla in July 2019.”

Just like Woebcken, we know dedicated VW drivers, as well as ourselves, will be sad to see this iconic Volkswagen model go. “The [VW] Beetle is more than a car,” says Woebcken. “It’s what made Volkswagen an integral part of American culture,” Woebcken said.

While it’s always sad to see the production of a beloved vehicle come to an end, we’re thrilled to tell you that you have the chance to buy or lease a 2019 Volkswagen Beetle from our VW dealership near Glen Burnie, MD.
